Culture Shift Starts with Us: Reimagining the Workplace from the Inside Out

I’ve spent the last 15 years working with people and organizations that are deeply committed to change—nonprofits and small businesses doing incredible work in the world.

And yet, in so many of these spaces, I’ve found myself asking a painful question: If we believe in justice, care, and equity, why doesn’t our workplace reflect that?

I’ve seen staff stretched too thin in pursuit of supporting their organization’s mission, leaving employees overwhelmed and unpaid. I know what it’s like to feel valued more for what I can produce than for who I am. And I’ve watched organizations replicate the very systems of harm they aim to dismantle.

Again and again, I’ve watched my clients work toward missions they care about deeply–missions we wish were accomplished yesterday. But the pace and pressure of the work are slowly eroding well-being. When I hear people accept that as “just the way things are,” I know it’s time for a different approach. That’s why I created Culture Shift, a workshop designed to help us reimagine and transform workplace culture together. It's essential, and it starts with us.

What If Our Workplaces Actually Reflected Our Values?

Most organizations say they value things like equity, collaboration, or transparency. But too often, those values don’t show up in the policies, communication, or decision-making. That disconnect creates a culture rooted in anxiety, fear, and confusion and aid in burnout for the staff who are working so hard to achieve the mission.

Culture Shift is a 90-minute interactive workshop that helps teams:

  • Identify the invisible norms shaping their day-to-day (urgency, perfectionism, power hoarding… sound familiar?)

  • Reflect on how their organization’s values show up—or don’t—in practice

  • Make small, tangible shifts to embed equity and care into their systems

Whether it’s rethinking how meetings are run, building healthier feedback loops, or creating space for staff agency and rest, this work creates ripple effects. And it’s grounded in the belief that culture isn’t fixed. It’s shaped and shifted by what we do every day.

Reach out if it feels like this workshop or learning more about these topics would support you or your team.

Why This Approach Works

This workshop isn’t about shame or blame. It’s about building in accountability, imagination, and alignment. I create brave, reflective spaces where teams can be honest about what’s not working and start building toward what could be.

A Recent Workshop Participant Said:

“I didn’t realize how much I had internalized dominant norms until this session. Erin-Kate helped us see that we have the power to change them—and gave us tools to actually start.”

As a nonbinary, Jewish, multi-ethnic, queer person of color, I bring lived experience, intersectional feminism, and evidence-based practice to every session I lead. But more than anything, I bring empathy —because I know what it feels like to be unseen, unheard, and overextended in a space that claims to care.

Final Thought

Even within complicated systems, we can create change at the everyday level. Small actions—taken consistently and with care—are how culture shifts. Not overnight, but over time. Not by accident, but on purpose.

Let’s do it together.
